Dr. Cynthia Breazeal Brings a Woman’s Touch to Robots
 
Cynthia Breazeal has been thinking about robots, specifically what it means to be a social robot,. For a long time. “Today most robots are transactional”, says Breazeal. They’ll do something --- like a dangerous job or a repetitive boring task. Or, on the other end of the spectrum they’re designed to look and speak like humanoids, which Breazeal thinks “freak people out”.

Handwriting: Back in Style:
 
Sitting at my desk, I just hear the sound of a honking car on my mobile phone. A glance at the phone shows the car’s engine was turned on and it was moving. Using the mobile app, I gaze at the driver’s face. It was my husband, and not a car thief. But I don’t have a fancy high tech car. I have an aging Subaru outfitted with a Raven upgrade device.

Making Dumb Cars Smart
 
Studies show there are cognitive benefits to writing something by hand instead of using a keyboard. Most notably there’s better retention of the material. Writing also lets you “mix modes” -- doodling, arrows and charts in a way that are faster and more intuitive than with a keyboard. This has not been lost on the tech industry.
